Linus Torvalds บอกว่า Linux 3.0 จะเร็วขึ้นแบบรู้สึกได้

เมื่อวาน Linus Torvalds ได้เขียนข้อความใน mailing list ว่า “Linux 3.0 จะเร็วขึ้นกว่า 2.6.39 (ซึ่งเป็นรุ่นก่อนหน้าหนึ่งรุ่น) อย่างที่สามารถสังเกตได้” อันเป็นผลมาจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงในหลายจุดและแก้ไขข้อบกพร่องที่เกี่ยวข้องกับประสิทธิภาพไปแล้ว

แต่ Linus ก็ยังบอกว่า ผล benchmark บางอันบนบางเครื่องอาจจะแสดงประสิทธิภาพไม่ได้เต็มที่

“Well, so far I haven’t really seen any suggestions on how to improve it much further.

“3.0 will still be noticeably faster than 2.6.39 due to the other changes made (ie the read-ahead), so yes, the regression itself is fixed.

“But performance on that particular benchmark with that particular machine is clearly not optimal, in that there are known setups that would be faster still.

“Of course, the reason for the mutex conversion was _other_ loads, where the spinlocks had bad behavior. So it’s a balancing act. And I suspect we’ve reached a reasonable point in that balancing, yes.

I’ll test that myself (but in a bit – I need to go do voter registration and socsec update first, though – I became a US citizen last week).

Because yes, that’s the reason I’m personally interested in your scheduler latency work: I think our X behavior under load is pitiful (I do “make -j16″ on my dual-core with HT Core i5, and web browsong shouldn’t start to lag as much as it does just because I overcommit the CPU a bit). So if this makes a noticeable difference, I think it’s very important.

Linus Torvalds ก็ชอบ Nexus One นะเธอ

วันนี้ Linus Torvalds ผู้ให้กำเนิด Linux kernel ได้เขียนลงในบล็อกส่วนตัวว่า หลังจากได้ใช้ Nexus One มาเป็นเวลาหนึ่งสัปดาห์ เขาก็ตกหลุมรักโทรศัพท์ Android ของ Google เครื่องนี้ซะแล้ว เป็นรักแรกของ Linus กับโทรศัพท์ Smartphone ซะด้วย เพราะที่ผ่านมาเขาเคยใช้โทรศัพท์ที่รัน Linux อยู่หลายตัว เช่น G1, Motorola ที่ใช้ Linux (ไม่รู้ว่าเป็นตัวไหน) แต่ไม่มีอันไหนที่ถูกใจสักอัน โดยเฉพาะ G1 เขาบอกว่าแทบจะมีเพียงเอาไว้เล่นเกมส์ Galaga (เกมส์ตะลุยอวกาศ) กับ Solitaire เวลาไม่มีอะไรทำเท่านั้น

ในบล็อกของ Linus (Linus ตั้งชื่อเรื่องโพสต์นี้ว่า Happy camper — มีใครเข้าใจมั้ยว่าเขาหมายถึงอะไร) เขาพูดถึงฟีเจอร์สองอย่างที่เขาประทับใจใน Nexus One คือ Pinch-to-zoom (ซูมภาพแบบใช้นิ้วสองนิ้งถ่างๆ บีบๆ) และ GPS เขายังบอกอีกว่า Nexus One เป็น gadget ที่มีประโยชน์และดูดีมากๆ แถมยังชมอีกว่าต่อให้ใช้โทรเข้า-ออกไม่ได้ Nexus One ก็ยังเป็น gadget ที่น่าใช้อยู่ดี

What a difference! I no longer feel like I’m dragging a phone with me “just in case” I would need to get in touch with somebody – now I’m having a useful (and admittedly pretty good-looking) gadget instead. The fact that you can use it as a phone too is kind of secondary.

วันนี้ 28 ธันวาคม 2009 เป็นวันเกิดครบรอบ 40 ปีของ Linus Torvalds ผู้ให้กำเนิด Linux kernel ซึ่งเป็นฐานรากสำคัญของระบบปฏิบัติการ GNU/Linux

เพื่อเป็นการให้เกียรติแก่บิดาของ Linux วันนี้ที่ Linux Journal ได้มีการลงบทความสั้นๆ ซึ่งเป็นบทสัมภาษณ์เก่าของ Linus เล่าถึงประวัติช่วงที่เขาตัดสินใจซื้อ PC เครื่องแรกและเรื่องราวเล็กๆ น้อยๆ เกี่ยวกับการเริ่มเขียน Linux อ่านแล้วก็รู้สึกเหลือเชื่อจริงๆ ที่ Linus จำวันที่เขาซื้อ PC เครื่องนั้นได้ซะด้วย นั่นคือวันที่ 5 มกราคม 1991 หรือเมื่อเกือบ 19 ปีที่แล้ว โดยเงินที่ใช้ในการซื้อครั้งนี้มาจากเงินทุนกู้ยืมเพื่อการศึกษา (Student loan) ของรัฐบาลฟินแลนด์ นอกจากนั้นยังมีเกร็ดต่างๆ อีกหลายที่ที่แฟน Linux ไม่ควรพลาด อ่านบทความฉบับเต็มได้ที่ http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/happy-birthday-linus

ป.ล. วันที่ 5 มกราคมก็เป็นวันที่ผมซื้อโน้ตบุ๊กเครื่องที่กำลังใช้พิมพ์อยู่ขณะนี้ และระบบปฏิบัติการที่ผมก็กำลังใช้ก็คือ Ubuntu ซึ่งเป็น GNU/Linux distro หนึ่งนั่นเอง (วันเดียวกันแต่คนละปีนะครับ เครื่องผมไม่เก่าขนาดนั้น)
